Born in 1875, Jujiro Matsuda, founder of Mazda, was unable to go to school and began his tenure as a blacksmith at age 13. This is when he realized that the machine industry was to be his dedication in life and began working in factories, arsenals, and shipyards.

Jujiro Matsuda

The Exclusive Patented Matsuda Pump

At age 31, Matsuda founded Matsuda Seisakusho in a tiny rented cowshed. Although he experienced setbacks, this didn’t hinder his determination to break down existing products into pieces and make modifications to develop and introduce the “Exclusive Patented Matsuda Pump” and aggressively import the most advanced machines of that time.

Lifetime Dedication to One Business

In his mid-40s, Matsuda was swayed to join Toyo Cork Kogyo to succeed the company’s ailing president. There, he produced a new cork compressed cork product, and its success helped rejuvenate the declining company. However, in 1925 the company’s factory burned down, but Jujiro reconnected with his former passion for the machine industry and rebuilt the company, renaming it Toyo Kogyo.

Giving Back with 3-Wheeled Trucks

Due to the great Kanto Earthquake in 1923, public attention turned to automobiles for transportation and Jujiro took advantage of a business opportunity in manufacturing 3-wheeled trucks, which were cheaper than 4-wheel vehicles, thus more accessible. It was largely due to his insistence on in-house manufacturing of parts, as well as research with engineers, that 3-wheeled trucks were mass-produced. He named the model Matsuda Go, which prompted the Mazda name.

Matsuda’s beginnings were meager and not well-endowed with opportunity, but he believed that faith in his own capabilities, in others and in the virtues of innovative engineering was what kept him going despite potentially debilitating setbacks. His unwavering spirit lives on in Mazda Motor Corporation today, an automobile company that dares to challenge and defy convention.
